Somatic Movement

“Its' about trust. Trusting that your body knows what to do. It made itself, whatever it is and whoever you are. Nobody else knows what's going on the way you do.”

~ Bonnie Bainbridge-Cohen, Founder & Director of The School of Body-Mind Centering®

Somatic Movement

Somatic movement is conscious movement that arises from a sense of the cells knowing themselves. It's movement that arises from the felt sense of the body and mind as distinct but not separate entities. It focuses on moving from feeling oneself from the inside out, rather than what it looks like from the outside. Practicing somatic movement can bring profound benefits to one's physical, mental, and emotional health in the following ways, and more:

-transforms one's ability to feel and register stimulus

-opens more options for how one responds to the same and varied stimuli

-refines how one interprets and initiates movement

-transforms how one interprets and initiates stillness

-enhances how one connects with self and others

-refines how one feels about and moves through their life and the world at large

The School of Body-Mind Centering® (BMC)

Body-Mind Centering® is an integrated and embodied approach to movement, the body and consciousness. Developed by Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, it is an experiential study based on the embodiment and application of anatomical, physiological, psychophysical and developmental principles, utilizing movement, touch, voice and mind. Its uniqueness lies in the specificity with which each of the body systems can be personally embodied and integrated, the fundamental groundwork of developmental re-patterning, and the utilization of a body-based language to describe movement and body-mind relationships.

The study of Body-Mind Centering® is a creative process in which embodiment of the material is explored in the context of self-discovery and openness. Each person is both the student and the subject matter and the underlying goal is to discover the ease that underlies transformation.
